The main concept behind the organization of the formaScienza courses is to speak of science and the scientific method in a non-technical way but, nevertheless, precise. The arguments we choose to discuss can be studied from multiple points of view, in particular, by combining the extreme scientific approach with the historic-philosophical one. No scientific background or specific preparation is necessary for the ones who wish to participate at these courses. The topics of the courses are closely related to the research work conducted by formaScienza.

"Genetic Algorithms"

Optimization is a branch of mathematics, that deals with problems of considerable applicative importance but of huge computational complexity. Still nowadays, there is no theoretical system that points to a certain course of action towards a satisfactory solution of the challenges imposed even by simple optimization problems.
In this scenery of uncertainty, the most efficient resource in the hands of scientists has been... imagination! Finding inspiration in biology, they have developed computational algorithms, the Genetic Algorithms, surprisingly efficient in solving the problems of optimization in a variety of applications.
During the seminar I will try to explain what are the Genetic Algorithms, give advice on how to develop them correctly and demonstrate some practical examples of their use.
I will conclude the seminar with a live demonstration of a genetic algorithm handling the problem of a combined optimization, hoping to successfully transmit, to all of you, part of the excitement and wonder that I've experienced, when I discovered this jewel of informatics.
